De novo engineering of a pattern forming reaction system in variable geometries

The aims of this project are to experimentally determine 1) how the geometry of biomimetic com-partments influence pattern formation in reaction-diffusion systems, and 2) how exactly specific reg-ulatory modules in proteins, such as membrane targeting sites or residues involved in cooperativity of binding reactions, influence their self-organization and large scale pattern formation. The experi-ments will initially be based on the self-organizing Min protein system from E.coli, with the long-term goal of identifying and constructing a minimal set of protein modules to reconstitute pattern for-mation.
